AN IRISH MAN is set to appear in court in Leeds later today charged with attempting to engage in sexual activity with a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.

The man travelled to the English city at the weekend, where he was confronted by a group of people who had set up a fake online profile.

He is due to appear before Leeds Magistrates Court later.

RTÉ issued a statement last night, following a number of media enquiries, confirming the man was an employee of the State broadcaster.

It added:

RTÉ has been made aware of this matter, which is being dealt with by the Yorkshire Police Force in the United Kingdom.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed a man in his 50s had been charged with “attempting to meet a child under 16-years of age following grooming” and “attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity”.

He was arrested in Leeds on Saturday (18 November). He has been remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court today.
