People warned to cook meat fully after 50 fall ill in north Dublin salmonella outbreak

At least 16 cases of salmonella have been identified following the outbreak.

ONE OF THE country’s top public health doctors has warned that a recent outbreak of salmonella in north Dublin is the largest single outbreak in the country over the past decade.

The HSE’s assistant national director for public health Dr Kevin Kelleher warned people to take extra food safety and hygiene precautions following the outbreak last week, which left at least five people hospitalised.

“We get on average somewhere between 200 to 500 cases of salmonella a year over the past decade,” he said.

“This is largest outbreak we’ve had over a single period of time.”

To date, 50 people – including four children – have fallen ill following a number of separate family parties held over the weekend of the 13 and 14 May. Out of these, 16 people have been confirmed as having salmonella.

The parties all received food from a single catering source – Flanreil Food Services Ltd.

Flanreil operates the kitchen at O’Dwyers Bar & Grill – also known as the Golf Links – on Strand Road in Portmarnock. It also provides outside catering services.

The HSE and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) became aware of the outbreak on Thursday, 18 May. The FSAI served a closure order on Flanreil Food Services Ltd on Friday, 19 May.

Swords woman Sandra Murphy O’Brien died suddenly on Sunday, 21 May a week after attending one of the affected functions (a communion party). It is not confirmed if she died from salmonella.

Speaking today on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Dr Kelleher warned people to remain extra vigilant when cooking and preparing food, and to contact their doctor if they felt they were suffering from food poisoning.

“It’s very clear this is an issue where it is both caused as a consequence of eating food but it’s also passed on by person to person contact, and that’s why people need to be very scrupulous about their hygiene,” said Kelleher.

He said that diarrhoea was one of the most common and quickest symptoms to appear.

“That comes on quite quickly, so [in the] majority of people it would be known by now,” he said.

He said that people needed to take extra care when cooking chicken and minced beef and the make sure the food was cooked through.

Kelleher said that the HSE and FSAI had only identified one source of the outbreak so far. It is believed poultry was the source of the food poisoning which caused the salmonella on this occasion.

The investigation into the outbreak in ongoing.

Affected people are told to contact their GP if they have any concerns regarding their health.

People who think they may be ill as a result of this outbreak may also contact the HSE’s Environmental Health Service or Department of Public Health in Dublin to assist in the investigation of the outbreak.

I don’t understand why we’re restricting access to these drugs for medical research. We’re fine with allowing researchers to work with highly addictive opiates as we know of the medicinal benefits of them. Why not open the doors to researchers so long as they have a legitimate reason for their research?

@Jason Culligan: Because LSD does a lot to your perception of reality. Governments loose control of their carefully built narrative if the population is using LSD. I can’t see any other reason why.

Jason, I’m all for letting people access natural medicine but LSD is different. The mental health institutions in the UK are still full of the casualties from the 60s and 70s LSD epidemic. Many of them were one-off users. Mushrooms are slightly different in as much the amount consumed can easily be regulated by the user. With acid in those days it was take the tab and see what happens and many people were damaged for life. It was a kind of Russian Roulette. I think we all know why governments are happy to let Pharma keep churning out the opioids.

@Mal: Well said. The mind is opened by LSD and this helps people think for themselves. The US government would sh*t themselves at the thought of larger numbers of their population thinking for themselves. Effectively what they are doing by banning LSD & other psychedelics, is taking away everyone’s sovereign right to explore their own consciousness.
If everyone in the world drank the potent psychedelic Amazonian medicine, Ayahuasca, we would live in a more peaceful and compassionate world.

@Paddy Ryan: Excuse me, as I went through the 60s/70s I can tell you that three of my classmates/friends from school in England are still in institutions from LSD damage. In my time at one grammar school the head count was over 20 for the whole school being treated with severe problems from LSD. At one point Graylingwell Hospital in Chichester was on overload from LSD casualties. LSD was available everywhere then. I was lucky not to end up the same. It either opened your mind or blew it. It’s a subject I know well so don’t talk about fear-mongering.

If you look at all the tribes that are left in the jungles etc. They run round all day in the buff flinging spears and darts painting each other up and getting high as kites on their own made beer and potions and spark plugs. They always look in great form and live till they are at least 3 hundred years old. And we can’t get a tiny drop of LSD when the shit hits the fan in our life.

The various cannabis strains don’t have all different magical ingredients in them to be tailored to specific illnesses. The strains mainly entail different smells, tastes, yields, disease/bug/mould/stress resistance and flowering times. The active compounds in all the strains are basically the same, there’d just be variation in the proportions of the active compounds, thc cbd etc… You don’t know what you’re talking about horse.
