Gardaí search land in Dublin after tip-offs about disappearance of Barry Corcoran

The man has been missing since last month and was last seen in Ballyfermot.

Updated at 9.40pm

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING THE disappearance of 39-year-old Barry Corcoran have begun searching an area of Bawnogue in Dublin following a number of tip-offs they received.

The father-of-one was last seen on 6 July this year on Cremona Road in Ballyfermot. He had travelled to Dublin from his home in Wicklow and made contact with a number of friends. He was due to return to Wicklow but his family and friends have not heard from him since that day.

Today gardaí at Ballyfermot launched a fresh appeal for information about the man’s disappearance, revealing they began a search yesterday of lands in the Bawnogue area. The search was prompted by a number of tip-offs they received, including an email sent to TheJournal.ie, which gave details of where the Corcoran’s body could be found.

“Completely out of character”

Speaking to reporters today, Superintendent Brendan Connolly said gardaí are very concerned for the man as it is “completely out of character for Barry to go missing in this fashion”.

He said gardaí had received calls from the public and they are following up on these. As a result of a number of communications about the man’s disappearance which pointed to a certain area of Bawnogue, they also launched the search which continued today.

The area mentioned is extensive and contains a lot of undergrowth and it is expected the search may take some time.

Today gardaí provided a more detailed description of the father-of-one, in the hope that more information may be brought to them about what happened to him:

  • He is described as being 5’11″ in height and is of thin build.
  • He has short grey hair and blue eyes.
  • Having injured his hip in an accident a number of years ago, he also walks with a slight shuffle.
  • He has a scar on the bridge of his nose.
  • When last seen he was wearing a dark rain jacket, blue jeans and black Puma runners.

His last movements

On the day he went missing, he took the 11am Bus Eireann number 133 outside Flannery’s Shop in Wicklow town to Dublin. He initially made contact with a friend of his at a gym on Fitzgibbon Street and then travelled on the Luas red line to Kylemore, arriving at about 2pm. He had arranged to meet another friend there.

Gardaí say he made some purchases at a local shop on Kylemore Road at 2.30pm and again at 6.45pm. On the evening he disappeared he was visiting friends on Cremona Road in Ballyfermot and was last seen in this area.

Anyone who may have seen or been in contact with Corcoran on the day he went missing or any time after that is asked to contact Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200, Wicklow Garda Station on 0404 60140 or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 1800 25 00 25.

Don’t blame the author. Poor spelling and typos are the industry standard now.

    The merry-go-round of futility continues.
Demand for Drugs will never be stopped (as long as there is misery and detachment in society).
Education, regulation and harm reduction are key to minimising risk to users. .

Its not about misery anymore i dont think, people choose to take these drugs for pleasure leisure and partying etc. its nearly a standard among the dance industry and “sessions” now with the majority of people that attend. Heorin wil always be around but i think it will slowly die out as it already is these days. Alot of people now know that if you choose to put that needle in your arm, your life wont be the same again! More realistic drug education in secondary school is needed

People have always known the dangers associated with heroin, they do it anyway. Take a walk down O’Connell Street, see how heroin is dying out..

Sean the pleasure, leisure & partying comes first, the misery will follow later. With the amount of tablets being taken by younger people today it’s only a matter of time before we have another heroin epidemic. History is firmly on course to repeat itself.
