A SEARCH IS CONTINUING this morning for a convicted Garda killer who escaped from a prison in Co Cavan, just two kilometres from the border with Northern Ireland, yesterday evening.

Martin McDermott, 25, absconded from Loughan House Open Centre yesterday evening.

He was serving a seven-year sentence for the manslaughter of a Garda in December 2009. He had led Gardáí on a high-speed chase on 13 December 2009 before crashing into a patrol car.

The crash, at Lisfannon in northern Donegal, killed Garda Gary McLoughlin. McDermott was given an eight-year jail term for manslaughter last July, with the final year suspended, and was also convicted of other related offences.

Gardaí this morning confirmed that the prisoner’s details had been circulated to all Garda stations around the country, as well as to the country’s ports and airports.

It is understood his details have also been given to the PSNI and a search is continuing on that side of the border.

The Loughan House facility is a low-security prison for men who are considered to require only low levels of security.
