The diver went missing in a cave north of Gort in Co Galway via Google Maps.

Search for diver missing in Galway cave

The diver had been exploring caves inland yesterday.

Updated 11.20am

A SEARCH IS underway for a diver who has gone missing in Go Galway.

A Polish man in his 30s went missing whilst exploring the Pollonora cave which is located inland, north of Gort.

The caves were reported to have been flooded to a depth of 52 metres but the Irish Cave and Rescue Organisation (ICRO) said the cave is permanently filled with water and that heavy rainfall did not effect conditions in the cave.

The man is reported to have had oxygen with him to last until 9.30pm last night but when he did not reappear at this time an alert went out and the search began.

The cave was searched by an experienced diver who is said to have excellent knowledge of the area at around 11pm. This lasted until 1am but there was no sign of the diver.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland programme, Connor McGrath from the ICRO said a number of personnel would be assisting in the search for the missing man but added: “As time is pushing on we are more and more concerned.”

The search will continue later today at around midday.
