Search for missing fisherman stood down for the evening

One of the men rescued from the water yesterday has died.

THE SEARCH FOR the fisherman that went missing yesterday after a boat capsized has been stood down this evening.

Three other men went into the water in the boating accident that happened on Lough Ree.

The other two men were rescued from the water, however, one man in his 20s died just hours after his rescue, with the other man in critical condition in hospital.

Hodson Bay

The accident happened when the men were travelling to Carnagh from Hodson Bay in Athlone on Thursday evening.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public who was in the area and saw the conditions the boat was facing.

The crew had found one of the three men in the water at around 4pm, while a second was found at 5.15pm.

At sunrise today, search teams made up of the RNLI, volunteers and fishermen were out searching for the third man.

However, the RNLI confirmed this evening that the search was stood down at 6pm today. The search will resume tomorrow morning where dive teams are expected to join the search.
