Three men held over alleged sexual assault of children in Athlone

The alleged assaults happened at around 4pm yesterday. The men detained are in their 30s and 40s.

THREE MEN ARE in garda custody in Athlone as part of an investigation into the alleged serious sexual assault of two female children in the town.

The alleged incidents happened at around 4pm yesterday, according to gardaí.

The three – one of whom is aged in his 30s, and the other two in their 40s – were arrested for public order offences yesterday evening and brought to Athlone Garda Station for questioning.

They were subsequently brought before a special sitting of Athlone District Court this morning where they were remanded on public order charges. Following that court appearance, they were arrested as part of the investigation into the alleged sexual assaults.

The three have since been taken back to Athlone Garda station, where they are being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
