A TEN-YEAR-OLD girl from Florida is recovering from a serious shark bite wound that required over 90 stitches.

ABC News reports that Kaley Szarmack was enjoying an afternoon at Jacksonville Beach, Florida, on Wednesday when a 3-foot-long shark took a bite out of her leg as she was standing in waist-deep water.

The young girl said she felt the shark biting her leg but managed to get away and out of the water.

When she realised a family friend, a six-year-old girl, was still in the water, Szarmack turned back and went back in to save her.

Her father Dave Szarmack said his daughter called out to the younger girl and told her there was a shark. She grabbed the six-year-old and pulled her out of the surf.

Szarmack was rushed to the hospital with several lacerations.

“I am just so proud of her,” said her father. Szarmack is expected to make a full recovery.
