GARDAÍ HAVE APPEALED to locals in Dublin’s north inner-city not to be afraid to come forward with information after today’s deadly shooting.
A man in his 20s, who is thought to have been an innocent victim, was killed today just after 12.25pm after being shot by a lone gunman at the junction of Sheriff Street and Oriel Street near Dublin’s Connolly Station.
A gun was found in a bin not far from where the shooting happened. It has been taken for a technical examination.
In the area this afternoon many locals were reluctant to talk, either to media or the gardaí, with one saying “that’s just the way it is around here”.
While gardaí say the victim was known to them, it was for “very low level” offences.
Gardaí in Store Street are appealing for witnesses and in particular anyone who may have seen a lone man, described as being “of strong build” dressed in dark clothing who was seen leaving the area on a bicycle in the direction of Seville Place and the Guild Street junction with Sheriff Street.
He abandoned the bicycle at the end of Sheriff Street and left on foot. He was last seen leaving Sheriff Street Lower on foot. Gardaí are not sure which direction he left the area in after that.
Speaking to the media today, Superintendent Kevin Gralton appealed for locals not to fear coming forward.
“Sheriff Street is an area we patrol extensively and it will continue to be patrolled extensively.
We deal with people in complete confidence. We have a very good community policing programme in the area. Anyone who has any information that will help can contact us in total confidence.
“I would ask that anybody that witnessed this shooting today to call us.
“I would also ask that anybody that saw a male on a black bicycle on Sheriff Street Lower at around 12.25pm today, and who abandoned it on Sheriff Street lower at the junction of Seville Place and Guild Street and then left on foot to make contact with us here at Store St on 01 6668000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station”
