14-year-old girl among seven killed in Michigan shooting spree

Police said they believe the shootings were random and not targeting particular people

Updated 10.15am

A 14-YEAR-OLD girl is the seventh person to die after a series of shootings in the Kalamazoo area of Michigan.

Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said the teenager was one of five people fatally shot in a Cracker Barrel restaurant car park.

The other two fatalities were in the car park of a car dealership. Police initially believed a third person was injured in that attack, but Matyas said that information was incorrect.

An eighth victim is a woman shot multiple times in the parking lot of an apartment complex. She is in serious condition at a local hospital.

The suspect taken into custody by police is a 45-year-old white male, who is from Kalamazoo County.

Matyas said the man did not resist when approached by law enforcement officers. He said weapons were found in the man’s vehicle.

Asked if he was confident that the man apprehended by police is the person who carried out the shootings, Matyas said: “The threat to the public is over. We now have our suspect.”

The shootings are believed to have been random and not targeting particular people.
