Australian couple wake up to find giant sinkhole in their back garden

The sinkhole has grown to 26 feet in diameter.

AN AUSTRALIAN COUPLE woke up to a surprise today when they discovered a giant sinkhole had developed in their back garden.

Ray and Lynn McKay in Ipswich, west of Brisbane said their neighbour first noticed the hole developing in their garden at 9am, but since then it has gradually increased to more than 26 feet.

Brown water

The large hole is filled with sloshing brown water.

The Mayor of Ipswich, Paul Pisasale said it has been established that old mine working shafts exist in the area.

A specialist crew is attending the scene to investigate the sinkhole.

TV footage showed large chunks of soil slipping into the muddy water.

The McKays have been evacuated from their home.
