UPDATE: Aer Lingus welcomes withdrawal of SIPTU strike threat

Shop stewards from the union at Aer Lingus met today to discuss clarifications of a proposal by employers’ body IBEC and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

AER LINGUS HAS welcomed confirmation received this afternoon that planned industrial action by SIPTU workers on Monday has been called off.

The company said it is now proceeding towards finding an appropriate solution to the pension issues and is immediately re-engaging with the ‘Technical Group’ of actuarial and legal advisors and with the Labour Relations Commission.

SIPTU confirmed earlier that it had called off its planned strike action on Monday following a meeting of shop stewards from the union at Aer Lingus today.

The SIPTU council of representatives at Aer Lingus had sought clarification from the employers’ body IBEC and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions on aspects of their proposal to mediate in the pensions dispute.

The shop stewards met today to discuss the clarifications received and decide if they would continue with their planned stoppage on Monday.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Frank Connolly of SIPTU confirmed that the strike had been called off and said “obviously the clarifications were sufficient”.

In a statement this afternoon Aer Lingus said that it now plans to operate its full schedule of services on Monday 19th November and apologised to customers for the uncertainty of recent days.
