Skoda launches its first seven-seat SUV: the Kodiaq

The Kodiaq is “a pioneer for the brand”.

IN THE SAME way Skoda’s VisionC concept morphed into the current Superb, its VisionS Concept, as shown at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, has morphed in to the new Skoda Kodiaq.

The Kodiaq will be the new flagship model for Skoda and is the company’s first model in the seven-seat market segment.

Jozef Kaban, Skoda’s Head of Design said:

The Skoda Kodiaq is a pioneer for our brand in two respects. We are entering a new segment with our first large SUV above the Yeti. And at the same time, the Kodiaq is the first model with the new Skoda SUV design language. It is powerful and emotive, but also timeless.

At 4,697cm it is longer than the Volkswagen Tiguan but just shorter than the Kia Sorento and it has a towing capacity of 2.5 tonnes.

Features that have carried over from the Vision S Concept include the wide radiator grille, athletically shaped doors and crystal-like rear LED lights that shine in the typical Skoda C-shape.

The exterior’s wide, clear lines carry over into the interior. The dashboard features a symmetrical layout with vertical air vents either side of a large display screen with all switches and functions designed for ease of access and intuitive operation.

There is three-zone air conditioning, door edge protection, an area view camera, virtual pedal and ambient lighting. New technologies in the Kodiaq include Skoda Connect mobile online services and mobile phone wireless charging.

The third row of seats will be optional. With five seats the boot can hold 720 litres and with seven seats 268 litres – or a massive 2,065 litres with all seats folded down.

At launch there will be five engines – two diesel and three petrol. The petrol units include a 1.4-litre with 125hp or 150hp and a 2.0-litre TSI with 180hp. The diesels are all 2.0-litre units with 150hp or 190hp with a 115hp version coming in 2018.

The range will include six-speed manual transmission and DSG automatic six and seven speed options as well as front or four-wheel drive.

First deliveries of the new Skoda Kodiaq arrive in Ireland in February 2017.
