Skoda has a new compact SUV up its sleeve - and here's the concept

The Skoda Vision X concept was the talk of the Geneva Motor Show.

ONE OF THE most talked-about concept cars at this year’s Geneva Motor Show was the Skoda Vision X.

It showcased a new compact SUV design with an interesting triple-hybrid powertrain comprising of a compressed natural gas (CNG) hybrid system with electric drive and a petrol tank that acts as a reserve for the combustion engine. Skoda claims that it emits less than 90g/km of CO2, and can drive up to 650km.

Although it is unlikely that such a drivetrain will be put into production in the near future, the concept car is due to go on sale from next year in an otherwise almost unchanged state.

That as-yet-unnamed car will be positioned beneath the Karoq in the Skoda SUV range, but like the other models, it will also have a name that starts with a ‘K’ and ends with a ‘Q’. It will compete against models like the Kia Stonic, SEAT Arona and Hyundai Kona to name but a few.

Skoda is already working towards introducing its first hybrid models, with the Superb saloon expected to be the first to benefit from a plug-in hybrid system. The Czech company plans to launch its first fully electric model in 2020, most likely as a mid-size SUV. Given the ongoing success of its larger SUV models, the Kodiaq and Karoq, this new, smaller model already looks set to be another sales success for Skoda.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Vision X Concept, Skoda’s CEO, Bernhard Maier, said:

Emotive design, modern drive technology and full connectivity: with the Skoda Vision X concept study we are presenting our vision of a modern urban crossover. The exterior design provides a concrete view of the third member of the successful SUV family. With this model, we will attract even more customers to the Skoda brand going forward.
