Slideshow: The 7 masterpieces stolen from Dutch Kunsthal museum

Several paintings have been stolen from a museum in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, including works by Picasso, Matisse, and two by Monet.

ONE OF THE largest ever art heists in the Netherlands took place last night, when art thieves stole seven masterpieces from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam. The painting are by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Lucian Freud, Paul Gauguin, Meyer de Haan and two from Claude Monet.

The Kunsthal museum, which means “art gallery” in Dutch, is a display space that has no permanent collection of its own. The heist happened while the private Triton Foundation collection was being exhibited publicly as a group for the first time.

Police in Rotterdam, Netherlands are reviewing surveillance footage of the museum and have released these pictures of the paintings to help with their inquiries:
