CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE ACROSS Egypt today following President Hosni Mubarak’s resignation yesterday.

Mubarak ceded power to the military after 18 consecutive days of protests, putting Egypt’s defence minister and head of the supreme council Mohammed Hussein Tantawi in charge.

Opposition figures have now called for a peaceful and civil transition to a new and democratically-elected government.

Pro-democracy leader Ali Abdel Wahab said that what happens next in Egypt “depends on how the military handles things”, Al Jazeera reports.

Earlier today, Reuters reported that the army had issued a statement saying that the current government would continue to run affairs until the next one was appointed.

The army also confirmed that it would support Egypt’s commitment to all of its regional and international treaties, the BBC reports, meaning the 1979 peace treaty with Israel will remain in place.
