A NEW SNAPSHOT of the social media habits of people in Ireland has found that relative newcomer Snapchat has proven unexpectedly popular – especially among young people.
Eleven per cent of the population has signed up for a Snapchat account, making it already more popular than Pinterest (6 per cent), Vine (3 per cent) and Bebo (8 per cent). Snapchat is also already closing in on photo-filter app Instagram which is currently at 14 per cent.
The latest Ipsos MRBI report into social media in the country found that the vast majority of people who use Snapchat are under 35. A total of 43 per cent of people aged between 15 and 24 reported that they have a Snapchat account, with half of these saying that they use it every day.
For those unfamiliar with it, Snapchat is a messaging app which allows users to send photos and videos with text and drawings added to them to people in their contacts lists. The messages disappear from the recipient’s phone within 10 seconds of them being opened.
Facebook remains the social networking behemoth in Ireland with 60 per cent of the population reporting that they have an account, according to the report.
Twitter remains in second place at 27 per cent while LinkedIn is the third most popular social network at 21 per cent.
