Despite fears, suspicious object found under soldier's car wasn't an explosive

A controlled explosion is said to have been carried out.

Updated 12pm, 20 December

POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have been investigating a suspicious object that was found under a car outside a house near Portadown yesterday evening.

It was reported that the car belongs to a serving soldier who lives in a rural area near Drumcree, called Corbracky Road.

It has been confirmed that the item was not an explosive, and was not malicious.

Superintendent Simon Walls said:

While police are keeping an open mind the item is not believed to be suspicious. Although this incident caused disruption to local residents, my colleagues and I are committed to keeping people safe and this operation proves that this is our upmost [sic] priority.

The BBC said a controlled explosion has been carried out on the object.

Neighbours were removed from their homes for their safety while the object was examined.
