THIS WEEK, A reader asks:

I’m looking for an SUV that will fit three ISOFIX child seats. Which are the best ones on the market?

The answer:

If you are looking for three ISOFIX points across the middle seats then you will most likely need to look at some large SUVs – like the Audi Q7, which has six ISOFIX points. There’s also the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorrento, Land Rover Discovery and Volvo XC90.

However, there are a few other options that may fit the bill.

The Honda CR-V has three ISOFIX fittings across the back seat but it is a tight squeeze.

Both the Audi Q2 and new Peugeot 3008 have three ISOFIX child seat mounts, one on the front passenger seat and on the outer two rear seats.

If you can hold on until July the new Peugeot 5008 will have three ISOFIX points across the back seats.

Although not technically an SUV the Citroen C4 Picasso compact MPV has three rear ISOFIX points with top tether.

If you’re buying new, lots of manufacturers are now offering additional ISOFIX anchors as an optional extra so it may be worthwhile choosing a car you like and enquiring about this option.

The Mamas & Papas website has a great list of cars with a diagram showing the position of all ISOFIX points in the vehicle. It is a little dated now and there are some American models in there, but it is still a very handy resource if you are looking for a used car with three ISOFIX points. Find the document here.

No matter what SUV you go for, make sure you bring all three of your car seats with you and put them into the test car to ensure they fit. Some child seats are bulkier than others and take up more room and there are plenty of slimline car seats on offer to make it easier to fit three across the rear seats.
