CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN Germany have unearthed a giant concrete swastika on a sports field in the northern city of Hamburg.
The German news agency dpa reported today that workers were digging in the ground with an excavator to build changing rooms when they suddenly hit the four-by-four metre Nazi symbol.
Members of the sports club at the Hein-Kling stadium in the city’s Billstedt district told dpa the swastika served as a foundation for a monument that was torn down decades ago.
City officials say they want the swastika, which was buried 40 centimeters below the ground, gone as quickly as possible. Because it’s too heavy to be transported away, they are planning to destroy it with jackhammers.

Relics like these help massively to people like me who study these types of design. Breaking them does nothing.
Unlike you, I like having these things as a reminder of the dark past and know never to allow it to happen again.

They’ll get it back eventually, in another 50 – 100 years no-one will care about the Nazis, there use of the symbol will be a footnote. Lots of people are already dismissive about the holocaust & WWII even now and it only happened yesterday relative to the age of the symbol.

@kehe: it is an expression of the past, passed on from one generation to another generation- it is therefore cultural heritage. And although less significant, is no less a cultural heritage site than Auschwitz, which is listed in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. Do you get it now?
