Taoiseach to address the nation tonight

Enda Kenny will speak to the nation about the upcoming budget in an address to be broadcast on television tonight.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY will deliver an address to the nation tonight ahead of an austere budget that will be delivered over the course of two days this coming week.

It is only the sixth time in the history of the State that a Taoiseach has addressed the country in this manner and the first time in 25 years.

Kenny will deliver an address after the Nine O’Clock News on RTÉ One. The address will also be played on TV3 at 10.15pm after the X Factor.

He is expected to focus on what is ahead in the budget of spending cuts and tax rises that are expected to amount to an overall adjustment of €3.8 billion in line with EU-IMF bailout targets.

It is expected Kenny will use the speech to appeal to the public for understanding of the necessity of the measures. In a TheJournal.ie poll, a majority of readers have indicated they will be watching tonight’s address.

TheJournal.ie will be liveblogging build-up to the address, as well as the detail of it and reaction afterwards from just after 9pm tonight.
