Ten departing health board execs given €4m in severance

The ten individuals were given an average payout of €405,000 each when they left as the Health Board became the HSE in 2005, according to the Medical Independent.

THE PAYOUT DEALS of ten Health Board senior executives cost the taxpayer over €4m when they departed as the HSE was established in 2005.

Ailbhe Jordan from the Medical Independent obtained figures under the Freedom of Information Act which showed that the HSE had to pay an average of €405,000 to each of the CEOs. She writes:

Under the provisions of Section 78 of the Local Government Superannuation Scheme, the payoffs to each individual included an immediate pension, a lump sum and six months’ severance pay along with added years provision subject to a maximum of 10 years.

In addition, each CEO received an ex-gratia payment equal to six months’ salary and a retraining grant of up to €10,000 paid on the basis of vouched expenditure.

The full figures of what was paid out – and exactly who got them are contained in Ailbhe Jordan’s report in the Medical Independent here>
