This six-bedroom Victorian home is one of Kildare's architectural gems

William Isaac Chambers also designed the nearby Glebe House – and the UK’s first ever mosque.

Dating back to 1882, The Ranch was first built for the groom of Lord Drogheda’s estate. Since then, it’s been named a protected structure, and in 2004 was carefully redesigned to make the most of its Victorian features.

The six-bedroom, six-bathroom home was originally designed by architect William Isaac Chambers, who moved from England to Ireland in 1879 and had his offices on Dublin’s Westmoreland St.

He also designed the nearby Glebe House in Monasterevin – and the UK’s first ever mosque, in Woking.

The outside of the property features two-tone brick, large windows and an impressive amount of land around the sides, covering half an acre in total.

Architectural nerds will notice the oculus windows with their circular panes of glass, and the classic Victorian sash windows.

Inside, there’s a large amount of space, suited to a big family. The dual-aspect dining room is impressive, as is the large kitchen, complete with fitted, floor-to-ceiling cupboards and granite worktops.

There’s an oil-fired stove to keep things cosy and an oak mantelpiece gives the whole place an old-world feel.

Of its six bedrooms, four rooms at The Ranch have access to en-suite bathrooms, and you’ll find the aforementioned sash windows in some of the rooms, too.

As for the bathrooms, they’re each fully tiled, and large to boot – the main one features a super old-style bathtub, complete with clawed feet. The upstairs level is rounded off with a neat hot press.

On the half-acre site, you’ll find plenty of green - mostly mature parkland, dotted with trees – and three renovated outbuildings.

These three buildings house the heating and water systems for the home, allowing easy access if needed.

The town of Monasterevin is located on the Kildare-Laois border, and is colloquially known as ‘the Venice of Ireland’ thanks to its waterways.

It’s a small, quiet spot, with the essential amenities on hand. The larger towns of Kildare and Portlaoise are 15 and 20 minutes away respectively, and by car Dublin is an hour away.
