Thousands of chickens die in farm fire

Firefighters fought the blaze for several hours but were unable to save the animals.

A FIRE AT a farm in County Limerick led to the death of thousands of chickens last night.

In total, more than 12,000 chickens died following the fire, which broke out shortly before 4am at Monalena, around 3 miles outside Newcastle West.

It took five units of the Co Limerick fire service to fight the blaze for several hours before it went out.

Sadly they were unable to save the chickens.

Gardai at Newcastle West are investigating but it is not believed that the fire was started deliberately.
