Three prison officers hospitalised after inmate lashes out with brush handle

The prisoner will be brought before a full disciplinary hearing.

THREE PRISON OFFICERS were hospitalised overnight after an inmate lashed out with a brush handle yesterday evening.

The inmate in question was being aggressive and abusive to an officer and was sent back to his cell.

He then returned with a broken brush handle and three staff were injured while bringing him under control.

The Irish Prison Service says an investigation is underway and the prisoner will be brought before a full disciplinary hearing.

One of the officers had to undergo surgery for arm and ligament injuries, while another officer has a suspected broken arm.

The prisoner in question was involved with another incident earlier this month, where two officers were injured when breaking up a fight.

The IPS commended the staff on how they dealt with this incident in a professional manner.
