Trinity students vote to keep Tom Lenihan as union president

The 21-year-old admitted to cheating in an exam during the summer.

STUDENTS IN TRINITY College today voted against a motion to remove the late Finance Minsiter Brian Lenihan’s son from his position as Student Union President.

The Student’s Union said today it welcomed students’ decision not to impeach Tom Lenihan with 62 per cent voting no and 38 per cent voting yes.

In May this year, the 21-year-old admitted to cheating, having brought a note into one of his exams.

Lenihan will now return immediately from his leave of absence and resume his post as the President of the Students’ Union. The son of the late finance minister has a history of depression which he has spoken openly about and said that at the time he had neglected his medical treatment.

Commenting after the vote, he said he was “happy that students turned out to have their voice heard at the ballot box on this issue as the students of Trinity College Dublin have a right to question the presidency, or any other office, of the union”.

While I am very happy with this result, I have a lot to catch up for to make sure that I am fulfilling my manifesto promises that the students have elected me for. I am eager to get back into my role aspresident and to continue with the hard work that my team and I have been doing so far.

“I am still humbled by the amount of students that stuck by me,” Lenihan added.
