MORE THAN 20,000 people joined in the time-honoured Spanish tradition of pelting each other with tomatoes today.

Tomatina celebrates its 70th birthday this year.

AP reports that 175 tonnes of ripe tomatoes were offloaded from seven trucks in the eastern town of Bunol before a messy hour-long battle commenced.
