Top readers’ comments of the week

Here’s our round-up of the most interesting and most popular comments from the past seven days. Did you make it in?

EVERY SATURDAY MORNING we take a look at all the best comments left on the site by our readers over the past seven days.

This week there was a lot of talk about the poor man who lost his penis, Brian O’Driscoll‘s final, final game and mortgage write-offs.

So here are the standout comments from the week that was.

The 5 most popular comments this week

1. This blood-curdling incident in England where a man was found on the side of the road with his penis chopped off made many of you squeal in horror. Aaro-Saurus got 1,827 nods when he said:

I’d rather they just put me down. Poor sod

2. A lovely 1,789 of you were on hand with your thumbs to wish Alan Mulvey well for his wedding today (Happy Wedding Day Alan!) after he told you the date on this rare-but-welcome weather update.

Im getting married on Saturday fingers crossed.

3. crankyrider was quick off the mark on Wednesday after Dublin Aiport asked visitors to refer to Monday as St Patrick’s Day…and not St. Patty’s Day as is their want. He (She?) received 1,365 thumbs up for this:

They deserve a patty on the back for that

4. We'll be seeing him again soon but last week's farewell to Brian O'Driscoll at the Aviva Stadium was pretty special. Tony Skillington noted that and got 1,326 green thumbs for his efforts.

Fitting farewell to a magnificent sportsman and ambassador for this country. Will be held in huge esteem for many years to come.

5. Again, on the story about the man who had his penis severed, White Fang made a very pertinent point and 1,316 of you agreed.

I can’t even begin to comprehend the psychological trauma this would cause. This man’s life has been shattered. Those on here making cheap jokes should be ashamed. The hypocrisy is potent, if a woman had been mutilated, such comments would be considered beyond the pale.

The top 5 articles which received the most comments this week

1. Gardaí called as students protest at NUIG over same-sex marriage referendum (397 comments)

2. Telecom giant Orange pull ads from Ugandan tabloid that outs LGBT people (227 comments)

3. AIB writes off €150k to allow family stay in home (225 comments)

4. Cork County Council calls for an immediate end to water fluoridation (223 comments)

And let's get back together with some pleasant Irish memories. This time, ones about lunchtime treats. Nuala Setter remembers:

My favorite school lunch was :  2 slices of bread and a bag of TAYTO.  At lunch I'd make my fresh TAYTO sandwich and wash it down with a bottle of Club Orange.  I'll be 60 years old this summer and it's still my favorite lunch !!!

For the weekend that's in it, we were amused by Claire O's observation about a small section of American visitors.

Is it mandated that the dress code for an Americans-in-Ireland stag party be 'comfortable farmer chic'?

On Wednesday, we asked our readers what inventions they would like to see. Some of their answers were pure genius. Like this one from Brianog2:

Saucepan with a clockwork lid that would stir contents for a bit

And this from Lorraine Valentine:

Something that puts sunscreen on my back when no one else is around to do it for me :D

(Yes, Lorraine. So much yes.)

This wasn't in the same article but it's a genius idea all the same. Michael Burke, on reading about how replica Irish telephone boxes are being made by a company, shared his beloved other's plans for his habit:

I might enquire about one of those. My Mrs has been looking for a real old one for a while. ..wants to banish me out to it in the garden as I’m a smoker. (I don’t smoke in the house as it is)

Please send us the photos Michael. And Michael's Mrs, please do it.

Next up. Let's talk about that Denny homecoming ad. It made us cry but it made some of our readers hungry. Sam Aritan, can we come to yours for breakfast on Monday? Ta.

We're keeping it feelgood this week in the comments' roundup and we found this - from a small charity - interesting. Hand in Hand had something positive about the ongoing charities scandal.

As a small regional charity we’re actually quite pleased to see the horrors of fat salaries etc blown out of the water. The kind and generous people who donate will be more discerning now and that can only be good for charities like this one and for the donor.

And, finally, we enjoyed this love in after the DailyEdge.ie shared their list of how the Internet has changed flirting forever.
