Over 30 injured as Chicago train derails and travels up airport escalator

The eight-car commuter train derailed early this morning at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport

MORE THAN 30 people are believed to have been injured when a train derailed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport early this morning and continued up an escalator.

None of those injured are thought to be seriously hurt with the Chicago Transit Authority confirming that the derailment took place at about 2.50am local time and advising that the station remained closed.

The eight-car commuter train derailed early this morning injuring 32 people on board after it failed to stop at an underground station at one of the nation’s busiest airports.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago says the train “climbed over the last stop, jumped up on the sidewalk and then went up the stairs and escalator.”

Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Brian Steele says authorities are trying to piece together what happened, but says the train was likely traveling too fast.

Investigators aren’t sure how many people were on board, but say none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The injured were taken to four hospitals.

The CTA is busing passengers to and from O’Hare to the next station.
