Man in his 50s dies after early morning assault in Tramore

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene, and is due to appear in court today.

GARDAÍ ARE APPEALING for witnesses after a man died following an alleged assault incident in Tramore, Co Waterford in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 54-year-old was discovered unconscious on the street at around 2.15am after an altercation on Lower Strand Street in the town.

He was taken to University Hospital Waterford for treatment, but was pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning.

The State Pathologist was notified and a post-mortem is due to take place later today.

A 20-year-old man was arrested at the scene, and is currently being detained by investigating gardaí at Tramore Garda Station for questioning.

He is expected to appear before a special sitting of Waterford District Court at 1pm today.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was in the area of Lower Strand Street between 1.30am and 2.30am on Saturday to contact them at Tramore Garda Station on 051 391620, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
