DUBLIN AIRPORT recorded one of its lowest temperatures ever – an incredible -14° celsius – as another cold night has left transport plans in chaos across Ireland this morning.
Once again, it’s Leinster and the east coast that has been hardest hit, with new sleet and snow showers overnight compacting upon what were already difficult roads.
Dublin Bus services are partially operational along the city’s main roads, though most buses are still unable to travel into housing estates. AA Roadwatch advises that it’s very icy on both the north and south sides of the city, with Parnell St, Dominick St, Mountjoy St and Parnell Square West being tough to travel on.
Lucan village is also tough to travel through, while the Kilmacud Road Upper remained closed, and icy conditions refused to relent in Rathfarnham, Terenure and Rathgar.
Main roads into the city should still be passable, albeit with great care, while roads through downs from Louth and Meath down to Carlow and Kilkenny – where up to 6 inches of snow fell in some areas – are all difficult to negotiate.
Dublin Airport is open this morning, however, having been closed for two stretches yesterday due to ice on the runways. Travellers are advised, however, to contact their airline before travelling to the airport as some overseas airports are shut.
Those going to London, for example, are advised that Gatwick airport will be shut until at least 6am tomorrow, while London City airport is shut until noon.
Irish Rail is operating a full service across all Intercity, commuter and DART services, though severe delays are likely after late-night trains overnight were held up by up to 75 minutes following signal faults earlier in the day.
A recurrence of those faults would likely see further cramped conditions around the network’s stations. The Luas service remains operational on both lines, though the Connolly stop is not being serviced.
Met Éireann’s severe weather warning remains in place, with forecasts for today’s temperatures between -2° and 3°, with temperatures tonight set to hit as low as -5°C in Connacht, -8°C in Dublin, Munster and Ulster, and as low as -11°C in inland Leinster.
