Two killed in house fire in Cork City

A 25-year-old woman and a 5-year-old boy die from their injuries after being trapped in a fire in Mahon, east of Cork City.

TWO PEOPLE – including a five-year-old boy – have been killed following a house fire in Mahon, to the east of Cork City.

The fire broke out in the house, on Nutley Avenue, at around 3:15am this morning. There were eight people in the house at the time.

Six of the eight were able to escape but the woman and boy were trapped inside the building and were only later recovered with the help of the Fire Service.

The pair were taken to Cork University Hospital, but were pronounced dead a short time later.

A technical examination is due on the house later this morning, and Gardaí from Blackrock are investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
