'Run and hide. Don't play dead' - UK security experts' advice after Paris attacks

Victims of gun attacks have been encouraged to escape and find cover rather than play dead.

UK TERRORISM EXPERTS have issued new advice on how to respond to a Paris-style gun attack, urging people caught up in a dangerous situation to “escape if [they] can” rather than lying down.

The National Counter Terrorism Security Office (Nactso) published the recommendations following the Friday night shootings and explosions that killed 132 people in the French capital.

Experts encourage victims to run and hide rather than play dead, leave all belonging behind and try to get others to escape with them.

The advice comes after several survivors of the Bataclan massacre recounted playing dead to avoid the attention of gunmen.

Officials also recommend finding cover behind “substantial brickwork or heavy reinforced walls” as “bullets go through glass, brick, wood and metal”.

Victims should then be quiet, silence their phones and barricade themselves in before calling 999, the document says.

The report also provides businesses with guidance on developing procedures “to dynamically lockdown” their premises in response to gun attacks.

It says companies should ensure staff are aware of how to report and respond to threats.

“If preventing an attack has not been possible, the ability to frustrate and delay the attacker(s) during the course of the attack and reduce the number of potential casualties can be greatly increased through dynamic lockdown,” the note advises.
