UN to end Syria observer mission on Sunday

The observers will leave as the conditions to continue the mission were not filled, the UN said.

THE UNITED NATIONS has said it will end its observer mission to Syria.

The UN said this evening that “conditions had not been met” to continue the mission.

However, it was decided by Security Council members to create a liaison office to “support efforts for a political solution to the conflict and respect for human rights”.

According to the UN, its Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekpeeping Operations, Edmund Mulet, said the mission will come to an end on Sunday at midnight.

The UN Supervision Mission in Syria was initially given 90 days for its mission, but this was extended by another 30 days in July.

The BBC reports that the mission became increasingly difficult because of continued violence in Syria.

There are 101 military observers left in the country, who will leave over the next week. The mission was first approved in April and 300 observers were sent there.
