Man found on rocks in Co Clare is identified as 86-year-old retiree

The man was discovered last Friday.

GARDAÍ HAVE IDENTIFIED the man whose body was washed up in Aughinish, Co Clare at the weekend.

Earlier today, they said that at approximately 8.50pm on Sunday 19 June gardaí in Gort received a report that the body of a male was found washed up on the rocks at Aughinish.

When they went to the scene, they found the body of a male. A local doctor was called and the man was pronounced dead at 10pm at the scene.

The man was described as between 50 and 70 years with reddish hair and blue eyes.

His clothing included pyjamas, trousers, a jacket, and a white handkerchief. 

An appeal was put out this morning for information from the public. This afternoon, gardaí said that the man had been identified as an 86-year-old retiree who was last seen near Salthill, Co Galway, on 17 June of this year.

A post-mortem is due to take place tomorrow at the morgue in Limerick Regional Hospital.
