Graffiti and rubble: The danger and beauty of the abandoned building

Donal Moloney takes us on a tour.

OVER THE PAST few months, Dublin-based photographer Donal Moloney has taken us on a tour of some incredible – but decaying – Irish buildings.

From abandoned rural homes to great Georgian mansions, the artist has given us a glimpse into people’s lives.

This series from the Big House with its bicycle, wheelchair and Maxwell House coffee offering a snapshot of how the resident lived. And we got to know Birdie through the hints in her untouched home – the English Literature books pointing to her job as a librarian and a poem telling us she lived alone.

This week, Moloney has given us an insight into his own work. By showing us some raw footage of when he first discovers an abandoned building, he shows us his muse.

“Nothing can replicate the excitement of discovering an abandoned building for the first time,” he says. “It’s a true adrenaline rush. Doing it alone adds to the excitement.”

Take the tour with him.
