Volkswagen's new XXL camper concept is the stuff of roadtrip dreams

So. Much. Want.

THIS, LADIES AND gentlemen is the stuff of roadtrip dreams. The Volkswagen California XXL is a concept motor home built on the medium wheelbase VW Crafter van.

The regular California is based on the Transporter van and whilst it is one stylish and desirable camper it is lacking one thing, a toilet.

The California XXL addresses this issue and more with its full wet room complete with shower, foldable sink and toilet – so no more hanging out with bears in the woods when nature calls.

The XXL also features a decent sized kitchen with a two-burner stove, sink, refrigerator, plenty of storage space, shelves, an extendable work surface and ambient lighting. There’s even a projector and speakers so you can watch films/cooking shows while you pretend you are on Masterchef on wheels.

Also inside the spacious California XXL is a two-metre long bed and a screened-off living area with a bench seat and the front seats that can be rotated 180 degrees to provide even more room.

The XXL is 2.9 metres tall but there are special indentations in the redesigned high roof to improve aerodynamics and ensure that the drag coefficient remains within the favourable range of a conventional Crafter van.

Volkswagen says there will be more information on the new California XXL concept vehicle once it gets its world premiere at the ‘Caravan Salon Düsseldorf’, which runs from 26 August to 3 September 2017. There is no indication of whether the concept will go into production, but we really really hope it does.
