18-year-old who died fleeing attack on garda's house in Waterford has been named

It is believed at least three people attacked the family home of the garda in Dungarvan.

Updated 5.06pm

THE 18-YEAR-old man who died fleeing the scene of an attack on a senior garda’s house last night has been named as Jamie Ducey.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) is investigating the incident and has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

It is believed the incident occurred at around midnight last night. The Superintendent was at his family home in Dungarvan and a bottle was thrown at a window of the house.

It is understood that the man went outside where he was confronted by a group of at least three youths.

He was hit on the back of the head with a bottle and tried to restrain one of them.

While fleeing the scene through a housing estate, one of the youths, an 18-year-old, was fatally injured. It is believed he was near a river and he took a fall. He was later found unconscious at this location.

A spokesperson for the Irish Coast Guard said they were called to the scene to assist gardaí in a “missing person search” at 1.10am.

He was brought to the local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The injured garda was also taken to hospital.

TheJournal.ie understands that two youths have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said today it received a referral just befre 2am this morning from gardaí in the case of the death of the man.

“The death occurred some hours previously, following the response of gardaí to an incident in a housing estate in Dungarvan,” the commission said in a statement.

It said a team of investigators has been in Dungarvan since the early hours of this morning ad the investigation is underway.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact GSOC on 1890 600 800.
