Woman in serious condition after Waterford fire that injured four firefighters

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Wellington St at around 11pm.

A WOMAN IN her 20s is in a serious condition in hospital after a fire in Waterford last night.

Gardaí and emergency services were called to the blaze at a residential premises on Wellington St at around 11pm.

A woman in her 20s was taken to University Hospital Waterford with serious injuries.

Four firefighters were also injured in the blaze and were treated in hospital.

Chief fire officer at Waterford City Council Niall Curtin told TheJournal.ie, “Conditions at the incident were difficult.

It was a very hot fire and there were people trapped inside the building.

“We had reports of persons trapped inside the building so a comprehensive search of the building had to be carried out.”

He added that people were located in another area of the building but firefighters had to transport the causality from inside the building.

That’s the nature of the business, it can be very dangerous.

Eleven firefighters attended the scene. The four injured firefighters have all been discharged from hospital.

Gardaí say that investigations are ongoing.
