Waterways Ireland employee killed while carrying out work near canal in Leitrim

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.

A WATERWAYS IRELAND worker has lost his life following an incident on the Shannon Erne Canal in Co Leitrim.

It is understood that the man in his 50s died as he was carrying out work beside a canal lock at Kilarcan.

The man’s body was found at the canal near Leitrim village at 10pm on Sunday night.

His body was taken to Sligo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority has launched an investigation into the incident.

Waterways Ireland said in a statement this morning: “Waterways Ireland offers our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of our esteemed colleague who has died.

“We are stunned by this tragic loss.”
