Dublin pub begins 'Welfare Wednesday' drink deals

A number of cheap beers and spirits are being offered with a social welfare card or bus pass.

Updated 9.30pm

A ‘WELFARE WEDNESDAY’ drinks promotion at a pub in north Dublin is being labelled as “irresponsible” for its targeting of welfare recipients.

A promotional poster for the offer at Liz Delaney’s in Coolock features the logo of the Department of Social Protection and several beers and spirits being offered for €3.

The ad says the offer is valid upon “presentation of a social welfare card or bus pass all day and all night every Wednesday”.

A staff member at the pub in the Northside Shopping Centre told the TheJournal.ie that the offer has “only started”.

The Coolock pub’s Facebook page lists other drink promotions such as “Thirsty Thursdays” and “Get F**ked Friday”.

Fine Gael Dublin West Senator Catherine Noone has today branded the promotion as “irresponsible”.

“While I’m not against social welfare recipients receiving discounts, I am against the promotion of irresponsible drinking and irresponsible prices,” she said.

I would be deeply concerned at people being encouraged to spend irresponsibly on the day they receive their welfare and I would call on this venue to reconsider the promotion immediately.
