A WELSH POLITICIAN about whom a series of undisclosed allegations of incidents with women had been made has been found dead.

Carl Sergeant was suspended by the Labour Party last week, after a number of alleged incidents with women came to light. He was a member of the Welsh Assembly, had served as the party’s chief whip and held a number of ministerial posts.

Police were called to his home at 11.30am this morning, where the 49-year-old was found dead.

The Welsh Assembly has suspended proceedings this afternoon following the news.

In a statement after his suspension, Sargeant said he had requested an urgent independent investigation “into these allegations in order to allow [him] to clear [his] name”.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones said that he felt he had no choice but to refer the matter to the party, once the allegations came to his attention.

He told the BBC: ”I asked my office to speak to those women involved who had provided detail of those incidents. As a result of those conversations I felt I had no choice but to refer the matter to the party.

If we have somebody who is in a position where they could embarrass the party or bring the party into disrepute, then action is taken. It’s not held in the back pocket to threaten them if they decide they are not going to vote a certain way.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said that he was “deeply shocked” to hear of the death of the Alyn and Deeside politician.
