TIPPERARY VET JACK Powell turned 100 earlier this week. As well as the President’s Centenarian Bounty, the Nenagh man received a special gift from a local business.

Powell bought his first ever Volkswagen car in 1953 when he was 40 years old. Sixty years later, he drove his 41st VW out of the Tom Harvey dealers in Thurles.

The local man celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday and to mark the occasion – and his unswerving loyalty – the car manufacturer gifted him with a brand new Polo.

Since 1953, Powell has owned thirteen consecutive Volkswagen Beetles, eleven Volkswagen Variants, two Golf GTi, four Jettas, four Golfs and two Volkswagen Polos amongst others.

His favourite? His first Volkswagen Golf GTi.

“It often got me in trouble, because the trouble with the GTi was it couldn’t go slow. They were an amazing car. It had amazing acceleration.”

When asked if he would be an ambassador for VW, he joked: “I have been an ambassador. I sold more bloody VWs than most of the main dealers. By example.”
