Prisoner stabbed in head with 'sharpened spoon' in serious condition

The prisoner lost a huge amount of blood in the attack.

A PRISONER IN Wheatfield Prison has been stabbed in the head, neck and face with a man-made weapon, described as a “sharpened spoon”.

The incident occurred yesterday when Gary Hanley, from Dublin, aged 26, was being moved back from a committal interview by three prison officers.

Hanley was repeatedly stabbed with the weapon by three other prisoners and sustained serious injuries.

Blood

It’s understood the prisoners jumped on him as he walked back to his cell and lost a huge amount of blood in the attack.

It’s also understood that the prisoner officers at the scene came to the prisoner’s aid, by holding down and compressing Hanley’s wounds until medics arrived.

The prison officers were also hurt in the incident.

It’s believed that had the officer’s not intervened, Hanley would have bled out.

The prisoner was rushed to hospital where it is believed he is in a serious condition.

Hanley had only just arrived at Wheatfield Prison from Mountjoy Prison the day previous.

The attack was caught on CCTV and an investigation is ongoing.
