Motion of no confidence in Wicklow county manager after firefighter deaths fine

Last month a fine of €355,000 was handed down to the council over the 2007 deaths.

A SINN FÉIN councillor is to table a motion of no confidence in Wicklow county manager in the wake of a fine handed down to the council over the deaths of two firefighters.

The county council was handed a fine of €355,000 last month, in connection with the death of the two men in 2007. The judge said it appeared to him that the system used by Wicklow County Council was flawed.

Wicklow councillor John Brady said today he will table a motion of no confidence in county manager Eddie Sheehy at a meeting tomorrow to discuss the fine handed down.

“The county manager was aware and presided over an organisation that had no regard for the health of safety of its employees; he also presided and still does over an organisation that vets emergency calls as a cost saving measure,” Brady said today.

“At this stage the families, the people of Wicklow nor I have any faith or trust in Eddie Sheehy and I am therefore tabling an emergency motion of no confidence at tomorrow’s specially arranged meeting and I hope to secure the support of my fellow councillors for that motion,” he added.

When the court handed down the sentence last month, the council said it “accepted that there were breaches in a number of systems of work”.

Brady’s motion is that members of the council no longer have confidence in the county manager’s ability to administrate effective local government in the county.
