Here’s what’s on the way tonight… And no end in sight, says Met Éireann

There’s a risk of flooding on practically all the country’s rivers this weekend. Forecasters say the bad weather will continue “as far ahead as we can see”.

MUCH OF THE country enjoyed a break in the weather yesterday — but it’s not set to last, as another system of stormy weather sweeps in from the Atlantic.

And Met Éireann says it’s unable to predict at this stage when the weather pattern will change.

Anyone living near a river is being urged to keep an eye on the local forecast, and to check for updates from their local authority, as the flood risk moves inland.

The risk posed by tidal flooding is now abating, in the wake of the high tides of last weekend and the early part of this week.

Here’s Met Éireann’s forecast for tonight:

Very wet and very windy at first tonight, but the rain will give way to showers. Some of the showers will be very heavy or possibly thundery overnight and winds will continue strong and blustery, with some severe winds on southwestern and southern coasts.

There’ll be further widespread rain tomorrow, “with some thundery downpours likely and the ongoing danger of flooding”.

Speaking on Morning Ireland, the weather service’s Gerald Fleming said that while the rain band and the showers were exceptionally unusual, the conditions posed a risk because rivers were already at such a high level.

“Cork, Kerry, Clare and Limerick will get the heaviest rain tonight,” Fleming said.

He warned that further weather systems were on the way next week, and that pattern would continue “as far ahead as we can see”.

More stormy weather and heavy rain is expected on Tuesday, Thursday and “possibly Friday,” according to Fleming.
