It's World Pothole Day - are your local roads in sh**e?

We’ve seen some pretty big potholes in our time…

A UK GROUP today launched World Pothole Day, asking people to join them on social media to show the “powers in charge of your road networks” how easy it could be to report potholes by embracing technology.

The Street Repairs group said it formed because it is “passionate about keeping local environments attractive and safe”. It runs a website and app which allow members of the public to report problems with their local roads. It then maps them all out.

Street Repairs Street Repairs

They want to expand on this, displaying potholes all over the world, to show how simple it would be for governments to set up a similar system that would help them keep track of the state of their roads.

Today they are asking social media users all over the world to share images of their local potholes with them.

We are certainly no strangers in this country to the pothole…

I was driving this morning and just watching the cars ahead of me. They were swerving all over the place to avoid the potholes, it was like being in a warm up lap in a formula 1 grand prix.

Someone needs to teach the councils how to actually fix a pothole. Shovelling in tarmac which is is what usually happens is pure idiocy. If slightly longer is spent to cut out a square patch and pack and fill properly chances are it would never need to be looked at again. The road will be much smoother afterwards too. Lazy solutions bred from lazy thinking are what generally happens

Why has Ireland so many potholes filled with water? Because the government took the money that fixes the potholes to pay for the water that fills the potholes. Bit of a riddle it is.

Well since this is an article about potholes and since 66% of road tax that was used to maintain roads has gone to Irish water. Think it is relevant. If you think not that’s your opinion but my opinion is that road tax is meant to maintain roads and now that 66% has gone to Irish water . it is relevant.

Well for a start road tax doesn’t exist. It never has. Motor tax however as far as I’m aware is put into the general pot and used for not just water but a plethora of expenses. You might as well complain that the extra fiver in the children’s allowance could be used to fix the potholes. Using your logic, it’s just as relevant, it’s just not as populist a complaint.

It is a legal requirement in Ireland to have motor tax if you want to drive your vehicle in a public place. Motor tax is a charge imposed by the Government on some motor vehicles. The revenue from this tax is used to maintain and upgrade the road network in Ireland. Motor tax is collected by your local authority on behalf of the Government.

Think it clearly states motor tax used to maintain roads.

The issue comes down to the extent of our road network. We are one of the smallest countries in the EU yet have one of the largest road networks. Drive through France, Germany, Ohio in the US, big open plains, wide near perfect roads, why is that? Well they have less of them to maintain and spend money on. We have roads zig zagging all over the place every few hundred yards.
