X marks the spot for Bin Laden's TIME cover

The weekly newsmagazine is releasing a special issue to mark the death of Osama bin Laden – the latest in the ‘X series’.

TIME MAGAZINE has announced it will be publishing a special issue this coming Thursday, in order to the cover the death of Osama bin Laden and the inevitable global tumult that has followed.

The special issue will be the fifth issue to date in which the front cover has been completely dominated by an X, and the fourth in which a person’s face has been obscured by a large and bloody cross.

In each issue, the trademark red masthead was also turned black – a gesture only one replicated by the magazine’s iconic red border, which turned black only to mark the September 11 attacks.
