Fine Gael TD for Mayo Michelle Mulherin Sasko Lazarov/Photocall Ireland

Young Fine Gael 'fully endorses' work by SpunOut.ie

The group’s president said that “whether Deputy Mulherin accepts it or not, the reality is that young people are having sex”.

YOUNG FINE GAEL has come out in support of SpunOut.ie, which was criticised by Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin for giving advice to teenagers on threesomes.

Today, Young Fine Gael (YFG) gave its “full support to the charity, Spunout.ie and the work it does for young people in Ireland”.

Patrick Molloy, YFG President, commented:

Spunout.ie is an important and advantageous tool for young people in Ireland. They provide important information for young people on issues such as mental health, education, cyber-bullying, sex and other important issues that affect young people in their daily lives.

Spun Out, a youth information charity, defended itself after Deputy Mulherin told the Sunday Independent that there was “nothing right” about it offering advice to teenagers on how a threesome could ‘spice up’ their love lives.

SpunOut is 20 per cent funded by the HSE and Mulherin suggested the HSE funding meant the advice carried a “State seal of approval”.

In response, SpunOut said that education needs to begin earlier than the age that teens first have sex, and it believed in the ability of young people to make the right decision for themselves once they have access to quality and reliable information.

YFG  said it supports Spunout.ie publishing information about sex, including information regarding threesomes. “Whether Deputy Mulherin accepts it or not, the reality is that young people are having sex,” it said.

Keeping young people in the dark about sex education is not a solution, and will only lead to young people making uninformed decisions.”

The organisation also welcomed the funding the charity receives from HSE, describing it as “money well spent”.
