Fifty years of innovation: BT Young Scientist launches today

Incredibly smart teenagers will be making the rest of us feel inferior over the coming days in Dublin 4.

THE MAIN HALL in the RDS will be jammed to the rafters with some of the country’s brightest minds over the next few days, as the BT Young Scientist exhibition gets underway.

This year’s will be the 50th instalment of the competition, with inaugural winner John Monahan, in town to launch the event.

Monahan flew in from his California home, having gone on to become a world-renowned biotechnologist.

The even is open to the public from tomorrow until Saturday, when Commander Chris Hadfield will visit.

The exhibition will feature live shows including World of Robots, interactive exhibits and a visit from Titan The Robot.

It will also see Coder Dojo, the programming club, set up shop and teach skills to students.

Of course, the main event will see 550 students from all over the country battling it out for the €5,000 prize, as well as the chance to represent Ireland at the European Union contest for Young Scientists.
